Grassland restoration in Kenya
By purchasing verified offsets in this restoration and conservation project, you will be joining companies like Apple, Tiffany & Co and GUCCI in protecting one of East Africa’s most important and extensive wildlife areas.
This iconic Kenyan landscape has been severely impacted by overgrazing, drought and deforestation. However, today the project area is home to one of the most effective forest and grassland restoration programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Through its unique seedling buyback programme and other livelihood diversification initiatives, the Chyulu Hills project facilitates the reduction of 1.1 million tonnes of carbon annually while providing employment to hundreds of local residents, including over 100 people working full time on grassland restoration and a further 100 animal conservation rangers.
Fun fact: The Chyulu Hills project area is home to populations of all of the “Big Five”, i.e. the African elephant, African buffalo, leopard, lion and the critically endangered black rhino.
